Default What is the capacity of the bladder in cc's (bladder)

How much urine does the normal bladder hold when completely full for
an average sized male?

I had a TUMT 4 weeks ago and wake up in the middle of the night and
pee about 400 cc.

I am interested in knowing what is the normal amount.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:
I read somewhere that the average bladder capacty is 350 to 500 for
young guys and 250 to 300cc for elderly men. At 400cc, you're looking
pretty good.

I believe it is close to 600 cc's.

Default What is the capacity of the bladder in cc's (bladder urinary ultrasound)

A quick Internet search suggests that 'normal bladder capacity' is
regarded as 400 to 600 ml. By normal capacity I take it they mean the
maximum volume that can be tolerated without *severe* discomfort by
someone without any particular urinary problems. It's unlikely to be
the actual maximum capacity. I myself once peed over 700 ml; I had
drunk a lot of water before a bladder ultrasound test, and they then
took quite a long time doing the test, during which time my kidneys
were working all too well. By the time they finally let me go to do a
uroflow, I was *extremely* uncomfortable, though I managed to hold on
somehow! (And remember, I never had major problems with urgency or
frequency.)

Thanks for all the answers.

Looks like 500 to 700 cc is the general consensus.

Chris,

I measured frequently and accurately after PVP in May. I would void between
300 and 500 ml but sometimes I could hold up to 600 ml. It is still about
the same, I don't measure anymore.

Well done, Fred! Since my PVP six weeks ago, I find that my daytime
voids are between a mere 50 and a max of 200 ml. At night--that is,
from my bed--I would guess that 300 to 400 ml would be the norm. That
guess is based on the total ac***ulation overnight, divided by times I
have had to pee--which can vary from 2150 to 1200 ml totals, and from
six times to only three. I am hoping that the rate and amount will even
out over time. Having to get up so many times at night was what
motivated me the most to have the PVP done.

Occasionally in the daytime, a sudden urgency on the way to the toilet
can be a problem--usually in the last three or four steps!

I read on a medical/anatomical web page that the bladder capacity
ranged from about 400 to about 700 ml. Although I am a large person, I
probably do not have a very large bladder (according to what Dr. Te
told me).

Default What is the capacity of the bladder in cc's (bladder psychology)

Richard,

I would think that your flow will eaven out with time and the urgency will
fade away.
In my humble opinion, urgency and flow rate are also dependent on
psychology. Although my flow is very good now, when I walk up to a crowded
urinal I still tense up, expecting a dribble. It never happens, but the flow
is lower than normal, but increases as the worst case scenario didn't
materialize. It is just an old hang up.

Default What is the capacity of the bladder in cc's (bladder down cancer prostate prostate cancer)

hi folks - i'll chime in on this one because i've often wondered myself
about the capacity of the bladder size.

i started wondering when i first came down with the BPH because of the
frequency and thought i would losing the capacity of the size.

i did find out that the prostate was so large and it had pushed into the
floor of my bladder and caused a ring to form and i was holding back
about 20 ml from each pee.

then i was dx'ed with prostate cancer.

had the RP done and they remove the bladder valve because it is part of
the prostate network and sew in the other valve, but in the process they
have to shrink the opening and size of the bladder in order to get the
new bladder valve to fit since it is only about half the size of the
other one.

ok - now they want to measure the output of the urine flow and amount
over time. that is when i first got my taste of numbers.

then, i had excess scarring and the best way i can explain it is that i
had all those wonderful symptoms we had with BPH except i don't have a
prostate. i did find that the scars produced lesions on the bladder
wall and as the bladder started to expand as it filled up, that is how
you have the feeling you have to go. the lesions wouldn't allow me to
expand without the feeling i had to go 'RIGHT NOW'.

so, i was measuring my output and it was 50 to 100 ml. and that was it.
day or night. no sleep. constantly up. it got so bad at one time that
i had to go to the bathroom 16 times in 2 hours.

i had to wear a catheter for 22 days after surgery and i had the
overnight bag. just for your information, since the bladder is not
holding any fluid back and you might want to know just how much liquid
leaves the body by the kidneys and not absorbed back into the body. my
nightly output was from 1200ml to has high as almost 2000 ml overnight.

i've had 2 surgeries since the RP because of excess scarring and the
last one did the trick. he also did the hydro extention of the bladder
to stretch it too.

when i first got the catheter out - which i had to wear for 5 days. i
slept all night without getting up first time in ages. bladder
output was over 600 ml.
but dreams don't last, and the bladder did shrink back, but it averages
about 300 to 400 ml with an occasional gut busting emergency hold all
you can type pee of about 500ml.

so, the reason i'm writing this is to informed everyone that there is
life after all of the this, the BPH, the prostatisis, the prostate
cancer. and that i have got my bladder size back, from what you folks
are reporting.

it's been 9 months since my surgery and i feel like i did before any of
this happen with the except that i can sleep most night all the way
through or get up once. but life is good. and for what's it worth
dept. the cancer was gland contained and the outlook with very good for
a normal life. and my psa was 6.35 at time of surgery.

i hope this information is helpful and which everyone a small prostate,
a good health pee, and low psa's.
