Default What will stop screw coming loose from glasses? (optometrists job)

Hello,

What do optometrists put into or onto the screws in spectacle frames to stop
them coming loose?

If it is a special product, is there a common household alternative that
will also do the job?

It should not require a visit to a spectacle maker just to fix a loose
screw.

(I have done the homework, the Google searches and asking older spectacle
wearers, to no avail.)

Thanks,
Stephen

I have never tried this on eyeglasses before, but I would suggest
trying Loctite Threadlocker. It comes in different strengths, and
works great on nuts and bolts.

Tighten the screw first (using a small screwdriver or if necessary a long
fingernail) then put a little clear nail polish on the back side (not the head
side) of the screw. that's what I use in my office

I believe that LensCrafters will fix them for free, if you look halfway
interested in getting a new pair (even if you don't buy).

A touch of clear nail varnish (nitrocellulose) has always done the job for
me.

I have used a Loctite 242 product. I did not keep a notebook. I Never had
probems with the screw getting loose after that. I think that I had occasion
to remove one of those screws without much trouble.

All the chains will fix them for free, which is especially handy once
you have lost the little screw.

Default What will stop screw coming loose from glasses? (lens)

Stephen,

I use a low to medium strength loctite on the lens screws. I do this when the
glasses are dispensed, not six months later when the lens falls out. This should
be done by the optician because some materials will crack if the loctite comes
in contact with the lens. I have been told that the fumes alone will crack
polycarbonate. Loctite will also damage the surface of the lens, especially if
coated.

Hope this helps

Default What will stop screw coming loose from glasses? (nail optometrists)

Hello Robert,

Thanks for the Loctite advice.
I suppose you wipe it onto the thread of the screw before you install the
screw.

It was hard to tell whether the nail polish suggestion was good or not.
If it was, anyone could use it.

I am aware that most optometrists will tighten screws that have worked
loose.
However it can take days to organise that, and we often need to use the
glasses in the meantime.

Thanks,
Stephen

Default What will stop screw coming loose from glasses? (opticians)

Many opticians in the US will do it for free (even if you did not buy the
lenses there) while you wait. Only takes a few minutes.
