Why I'm here
I suppose both could be true. However, if they're using the "long-term
drug-induced psychosis" diagnosis to somehow dismiss her, then they need a
kick in the ass! How long has she been diagnosed with BPD? Is it her only
diagnosis (besides "drug induced..."? It can take a very long time to find
a helpful med combination. I've always been weary of treating people with
BPD with anti-psychotics. They can be helpful in very small doses but the
side effects, many times, do outweigh the benefits. I took lithium, in
small doses and it didn't help me near as much as it hurt me. The
prescriber failed to inform me that it can cause thyroid diseases and it
did.
Things improved the most for me when my life situation settled and when I
was taking Adderal (for A.D.D) and Clonapin. I got sick and tired of being
sick and tired. I couldn't bear the whole psych thing anymore. I just
wanted to be "normal." So I discontinued the counseling and continued to
take my meds for a time.
Any physician or psychologist who's worth anything will tell you that
personality disorders are in no way an exact science. The patient knows
themselves the best. What does your girlfriend think of the drug induced
psychosis diagnosis? What does SHE think she needs?
FYI, there's a great book called, "Lost in the Mirror" by Richard A.
Moskovitz M.D. which I highly recommend to sufferers of BPD.
