Default Drainage

My wife is nearing the one year anniversary of her sub total
colectomy and her ileostomy. Out of no where. this morning she started
to get some very minor drainage from her rectum, and she actually had
a minor incidence of gas.
Is this to be expected over time, or is time to panic?

Harry

As was explained to me by an ET nurse, the discharge is normal and the
amount that is excreted and the time it takes to be excreted is all
function of the healing process. In your wife's case it is possible she is
finally healed and the rectum is returning to normal function. The gas is
normal too, I had my first passage about 4 weeks post op and it spooked me a
bit at first too.

From what was told, if you still have some colon left, (and a rectum), it
will do exactly what it should do----

It will continue making mucus as it's normal lining. This will end up being
drainage.

It's doing what it always has done---

Best----

Have a mucous discharge from my rectum for 14 years. Been told this is
normal for a colostomy. Mucous is clear white, does not stain or have odor.
A nuisance.
