wow. i haven’t read thru all the responses to my mayday,
apparently d*d started showing some signs of life around the
time (a.) my sis told him i’d be coming up to visit him
after choir practice, and (b.) my choir pr*yed for him en
masse…and probably (c.) several other sources of positive
energy that i’d tapped (inc. ppl here!) started checking in.
i have never seen my fthr even REMOTELY anything like he was
last night. he was completely non-responsive. well, every
once in awhile, if asked a question, he’d move in a way that
might indicate a preference…like…”do you want your robe
on?” and he’d look at the robe and maybe shift his hand a
bit towards it.
but…he ate a bit, and after what must have *seemed* like a
really brief conflict, he took meds last night, too. it
must have seemed like not much of a fight, but it SURE
didn’t feel like that. i begged him, from the heart.
the meds, and told him “You just made your daughter *very,
very happy*.” …so maybe it didn’t seem like it was
insignif to her, either.
this morning he ate breakfast like food was just invented,
and took meds without a fight. he was clearly more
coherent…blood pressure was 110/72 – down from 160/94 last
night…and he was oriented x3…though that was a close
call! “Paul, do you know where you are?” *jen holds
breath* *d*d thinks for a sec, then answers correctly*
(see, that response is important for 2 reasons: one, he
responded. this was a MAJOR improvement from last night.
two, he responded *correctly*…and, considering i’d been up
with him for 2.5 hrs during the middle of the night trying
to help him figure out that no, neither of us *had* d*ed in
a fire, and yes, we *were* both alive, and were still at
that hospital. apparently he had a pretty bad
nightmare….this was a major accomplishment, too.)
he’s still kinda out of it…but…he’s responding, taking
meds, eating, and seems mostly rational…so…i’m feeling
*much* more optimistic.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE SUPPORT!!!!!
oh, one last thing: he has my teddy bear. the one he won
for me at the county fair when i was 2. i put it on his
pillow last night, and he acknowledged it (gotta understand,
this is *not* my fthr! i mean…he just doesn’t act like
this.). this morning, i left teddy in charge while i
grabbed some breakfast…and then when i was leaving, i
asked dad if he wanted teddy to stay with him and keep an
eye on him, *and dad nodded!*
ok, i *have* to get some sleep!
a grateful jt
“It is astonishing, really, how many thoroughly mature,
well-adjusted grown-ups harbor a teddy bear — which is
perhaps why they are thoroughly mature and well-adjusted.”
