Cardiac surgery at doorstep

Faridabad, January 6, 2003 – ”Heart ailments among the
middle-aged section of Indian society have been on the
rise. There is a need to make people aware of this so
that they do not face the risk of a heart attack or
cardiac surgery. The urban people should bring proper
changes in their lifestyle and eating habits to remain
physically fit to keep away heart ailments”.
This was stated by renowned cardiac surgeon and director
of Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, Delhi, Dr
Naresh Trehan, while speaking to mediapersons here today.
Dr Trehan was here at Escorts Hospital to perform the
first cardiac surgery at this centre. The hospital has
started the facility of cardiac surgery here under the
guidance and supervision of Dr Trehan.
It proposed to provide the same facilities to the
patients which were available at Escorts Hospital, Delhi,
said Dr Trehan. He said this was the first hospital in
Haryana where world class check-up and treatment of heart
patients would be made available besides the Escorts
centre in Delhi. Dr Trehan said the problem of heart
ailments had seen an upsurge in Indian society in the
past several years. He said as the risk factor for heart
problems had gone up among the middle-aged sections of
society all those aged between 30 and 35 years ought to
undergo a complete check-up, especially to know if they
had any chance of developing a heart related problem. He
claimed that the risk of heart attacks could be checked
completely and the patient could avoid major surgery if
the problem was caught in the initial stages.
According to Dr Trehan, males in the age group of 30 to
35 and females in the age group of 35 to 40 needed to go
for a through check-up at a good institute.
Claiming that check-up costs had been reduced and were
quite affordable, he said this would help people save
time, money, energy and other problems which occur later.
Dr Trehan disclosed that Escorts Heart Institute at Okhla
had performed about 36,000 operations so far, while about
4,000 operations were done last year. He said this year
the number had touched 4500 already.
Dr Trehan advised that people should ensure that they are
not overweight and get regular check-ups for cholesterol
level, high blood pressure and diabetes. He said while
many diseases could be checked through proper diet. A
daily walk of 45 minutes or regular physical exercise
could prove really helpful in maintaining a healthy
