Default Upgrading from 98SE to ME

I am presently running Win98SE. I'd like to upgrade to WinME. Mostly
just to get the built in driver support that ME offers. Can I just
install ME right on top of Win98SE, or do I need to completely
reinstall everything? I'm really not willing to start over. It would
take me weeks to reinstall everything. If I can install ME on top of
98, I will do it. Otherwise I'll continue using 98SE.

Thanks

George

Maybe, but a bad idea. You get better results with a new install.

I usually get most of it installed in a couple of days, although I
might have missed a few custom settings.

You probably can, it's just better not too. You have the common
trade-off of faster vs. better.

BTW, if this machine is reasonably new, you might want to go to a
NT-based OS instead. That includes XP and Vista, but 2000 is still
better.

No matter how you instal a new version of Windows - you will still
need to reinstal all your programs. Even if all the folders remain on
the hard disk, their information in the registry will have
disappeared.

You will need to reinstal your programs to get them back into the
registry,

Elly.

That is simply false. In every case I'm aware of, you could upgrade
to the newer version of windows without needing to re-install all
software and applications. The upgrade versions of Windows were
specifically sold for this purpose. And it certainly can be done
going from 98 to ME.

Now, as Mark pointed out, a total new install has advantages.
However, I've taken the upgrade path many times with no problems.
Many of the upgrades even have the ability to roll back to the
previous install if you have problems. Granted, no one can guarantee
that in every case you won't run into a problem, but the upgrade path
is available. And the main advantage is not having to re-install
applications, settings, etc. And you really don't have anything to
lose trying it? If you run into problems, you can then just do a
total wipe and new install.

Try the upgrade IF your existing 98SE installation is running well
with no problems (in most cases, that means a recent installation).
Otherwise, it would be a good idea to reinstall everything rather than
having ME inherit those problems.

Save your data - do***ents, spreadsheets, etc. - to some CDs or
whatever, then format the hard drive and do a fresh install. My sense
of the vast majority of complaints about WinME is that they relate to
"upgrade" installs over an older OS rather than fresh installs. My
own WinME was a fresh install and I'm very happy with it.

One drawback. There were a zillion patchs for WinME and if those
aren't still available from the MS web site or on a CD then I think
you're better off sticking with 98SE.

I know all the patches are still available on some site for 98, so I
assume someone did the same for ME. I forgot the site where 98 has
the archive.

I was wondering about that. I know 95 could be upgraded to 98 easily.

I have 8 years on this installation of 98. Lots of things that I would
not even be able to replace. So I definately do not want to start
over. I have always been a fanatic about removing all traces of left
over junk from apps, and clearing cache, etc. I've moved this
harddrive to several computers and it still runs very well. I'll
probably give the upgrade a try. I have my entire harddrive backup up
onto another hard drive anyhow, so it would be easy to go back. About
the only junk on here are some older drivers that are no longer
needed. It's not always possible to do***ent them, but I do try.

WinME comes Internet Explorer 5.5 if you are running a newer version it
might stuff things up a bit

Data files you can (and should) backup? Do so, and then copy then to
the new disk after your clean install of this new OS.

If what you have are installations of programs, you should consider
the risks be being dependant on that ONE installation.
