retrieving a ppt file that may have become corrupted

I created a ppt file and was working directly off my USB portable chip. After
having saved the file, as ppt, I cannot open the file successfully in
PowerPoint. I tried retreiving the file from the incremental backups area.
Can anyone shed some light on why the file may have become corrupted and can
no longer be opened by PowerPoint?
