Default Client cant ping server

I'm new to networking and I have a very little experience in networks.
My network consist of two machines. One running win server 2003 as a DC
and one running win xp pro SP2. I'm using a 3Com router. Both machine
are on the same subnet 192.168.1.0.
My problem is that the client (win xp) can't ping the server (2003)
Both machines have connectivity, they go on the internet. The server is
able to ping the client, but the client is not able to ping both domain
and ip of the server. the client pings the router. All firewalls are
disbaled.
Any clue ?
Thanks in advance.

Are they in the same workgroup or domain?

The win 2003 is a domain controller. The XP is still setup as a
workgroup, I'm trying to join to XP to the domain but I'm not able to
since the server doesn't reply to pings.

Are you pinging by IP or by DNS?

Is it possible that you have disabled Routing and Remote access and enabled
the Windows Firewall. This would fit your description of your problem
exactly. You must disable the Windows Firewall on the advanced tab of your
connection properties. Then, re-enable routing and remote access by clicking
Start --> Administrative Tools --> Routing and Remote access. Both of these
services cannot run together. You must disable the ICF first b4 proceeding.
If this is not your problem then it was a shot in the dark....

Try to configure the IP of the client to get
"Automatic IP" from the server. Set the IP
address of your server on "prefered DNS IP"
and Give Alternative IP Adrress for the
client" Restart both and Try it.
