Default Ethernet Connection

I want to transfer files from a desktop to a laptop through the Ethernet
cable I have. The problem is that when the cable is physically connected,
neither computer recognizes it, and says that the LAN is disconnected. I know
the NIC works on each because when I connect to a (different) router, the
connection becomes active. The desktop is running Windows XP Home (SP1) and
the laptop is running Windows XP Professional (SP2). I've successfully made
ad-hoc connections before, but for some reason this time it isn't working.

Any suggestions?

Either use a cross over cable or plug each PC into a hub/switch.
