Default Excel Expert Problems

I am getting ready to take my Excel 2003 (With Office 1 Recently announced)
Expert test and on my practice test my proffessor made for me the test has a
question about how to change a format of a cell.

The current format is 5555555 and it wants me to change the format so it
displays as ##-##-### WITHOUT editing the information within the cells to do
so except the formatting itself. i cant do that without getting a chance
point taken away EVEN when i follow the microsoft office online help... i
was wondering if you would be able to help me since later a similar question
asks me to change 55-55-555 to ## ## ### and it fails then too.

anyone?
help?

First, WRONG FORUM, make sure you post to the right forum.

Second, this is a basic question, and I'll provide some assistance
since I am feeling unusually nice today. If you paid attention in class,
instead of net surfing, you would know the answer. To give a not
so subtle hint, you CUSTOM FORMAT the CELL. How you do
that, I'll leave as an exercise for the student.

couple of things

my MOS class was during my lunch and we had to pay to get in in the first
place so we had a half an hour that if you surfed the net you were kicked
out. Second of all as you notice i said that the microsoft online help
didn't work because it says to got custom format then cell. I was wondering
if there is another way to do it. And i didn't post in the wrong forum since
this pretains to the Excel Expert Certification Exam through Certiport.

I have no idea what the problem is. It worked for me in all three
versions of Excel that I have access to.

Highlight the cell you want to format
Select Format (Top line Menu)
Select Cells
Select Number Tab
Select Custom Format
Type the format you want into the Type: box
It changes the format with no problem. You have to either tab out,
hit return, or highlight another cell before the format change shows up
