Default Cannot logon to XP after changing network settings

Hi. I have changed the network settings on a Windows XP machine and
after rebooting, it no longer lets me logon.

After entering the username and password it tells me "The system could
not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct"

The problem was caused when I used the Network setup wizard to change
the network settings from a business network to a home network. I
guess that I have removed the domain settings or something and that it
is now trying to logon to WORKGROUP rather than the domain that it
used to logon to when it was used in the office.

It is a laptop and it has not been in the office for months and it has
not connected to the office network for months. I thought changing it
to a home network would let me share its drives with other machines in
the house.

My question is, how do i get to logon to this machine again? I can't
find an option to let me enter a domain name and even if I could, I
don't know the full name of the domain it used to connect to.

Logon as 'administrator' and create a new user for normal use.
If you don't have the admin. password, you'll either have to get
that from whoever set it up, or buy a new copy of XP.

Presumably as well as administrator you'll have a local account for yourself
? Is there an OPTIONS tab in the Windows
login box. Look for a pull down menu there that may contain the name of
your computer and select that. Login with
your normal username/password to your local computer instead of the domain.
You should have enough admin rights
to put right the network settings as you were able to do it in the first
place.

I received the answer below in another group. I can't logon as
administrator as I don;t know the password and there aren't any
options in a drop down so the answer below was the only thing that was
able to sort me out.

By joining the Workgroup you have effectively disjoined from the
domain
and the trust to the domain has been lost, you can no longer logon to
the domain. The only way to log back on to the machine
now is with a local administrator account. Try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del
twice at the logon screen and try to log on using the built in
Administrator account, any network/IT administrator worth his salt
should have set a password on the account but maybe the account has no
password, try leaving the password box blank and press <Enter>. If
you
cannot login without a password you can use a password reset utility
like this one: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Had a similar problem with a friend's system with losing the admin password.
Her recollection of her password matched the hint I put in my notebook,
when I created a limited account to protect her from the activities of her
neice! Still no joy though.

We cracked it by loading in safe mode (f8 at start up?). There is
another account called 'administrator' there which is not normally visible
and may have a blank password.
From there, control panel > user accounts > bingo.
That might be your way in.
hth and good luck. Please post your outcome as I also have a system locked
into a domain from which I want it released!

Phil
