is it the sound card or someting else

I re formatted my win, XP and after I did the sound stoped working I put a
cd in to play ang got this messagd

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning
properly

there is a sound device installed can any one help

use the CD that came with your motherboard to install the sound device
if your sound device is part of the motherboard.
