Default No way to get windows works after Windows Update

Hello,
I have a laptop ACER ASPIRE 9302 sold with Windows Vista and I installed
my Windows XP SP2 on it.
Installation was ok, I installed several programs that worked well.
Then I launched Windows Update that found a lot of priority updates.
They installed well too. But after reboot, as soon as windows started to
load (I don't even see the black screen with the Windows logo), the PC
rebooted. It then came back to the menu to choose safe mode or normal
mode or... But any option I selected, the PC rebooted without going
further in the loading.
I thought that perhaps something happened during Windows Update, so I
re-installed Windows but exactly the same thing happened after the big
first Windows Update. As far as there are about 70 updates, I can not be
more accurate on which update is the cause, but...
Any idea?
Thanks
David L.

If it were me I'd reload XP again and this time do the updates a little
differently.

First I would go into the control panel and make sure automatic updates
option is disabled, at least for now. If/when you get the beast updated you
might consider turning it back on later.

Then I would start the update program but when it asks you to choose between
"Express" or "Custom" pick Custom.

I have found that on problem machines I try to only let windows update the
hardware options the first time. Most of my crashes have been traced to
windows trying to install the wrong hardware drivers, usually with the older
Video cards I tend to use. Since the hardware updates are usually much
fewer in nature I load them and then do a boot. If things remain stable I
go to the "system restore" section and make a restore point.

Then I go back to the update program and have it do the first 10 or so
updates. Another boot and if things are stable I make another restore point
and continue adding updates until they are either done or I have narrowed
down the problem update.

True it's a real pain in the rear to do things like this but it is one way
to get things done, eventually.

One other way I've done this is to use the Acronis True Image program to
back up the image of the drive in question to second hard drive, usually an
USB external drive rather than trusting the windows restore points. With
the Acronis recovery CD I can boot the computer and restore the drive back
to what did work prior to adding the offending updates and then do the same
trial and error method of identifying which one of the latest 10 or so
updates actually caused the failure.

There are other backup programs available, some of them are even Freeware
should you wish to use them.

Default No way to get windows works after Windows Update

Hello,

GlowingBlueMist a écrit :

Thanks for the quick answer, I am going to do all this this way (system
backup+hardware first+program next+priority at the end, 10 at a time).
Another answer I got on a french NG
(microsoft.public.fr.windowsxp.installation) is to install Win Installer
3.1 (KB893803) first, then reboot, because someone had several crash due
to updates made prior to this installation.
So I am going to respect both answers.
Thanks again

Hello,
I sent a post the 3rd of september about the fact that after 70 Windows
XP updates, my laptop ACER ASPIRE 9302 was constantly rebooting at the
beginning of Windows load time. The update responsible for all that has
been determined and it is the KB931784. So Why???? I do not know.
All other updates have been installed and the computer works fine.
Just if someone may have the same problem.
