My WinXP does it for me automatically.
Select (highlight) all the files you want to rename, so they are all
highlighted. (They need to be in the same folder to do that)
Just highlight the first one, scroll down to the bottom and shiftclick
to highlight all of them)
Rightclick on the first, select Rename.
Type "Fred.jpg" or whatever.
The files will be renamed Fred.jpg, Fred (1).jpg, Fred (2).jpg
and so on.

If you name the first file Fred (1).jpg, the subsequent ones will be
named Fred (2).jpg, Fred (3).jpg etc. However, if you name the first
one Fred (01).jpg or Fred (001).jpg, the next ones will just be Fred
(2).jpg etc-it drops the 0's.

You are right Jonah. That isn't what I want. The format they are in, must
stay the same. But, I'm bettin' the rename programs will do just what I am
looking for.

Yeah get a renamer app Mike, unless you fancy doing it all manually, or
a batch file if you fancy a go. I don't know how to write a batch file I
never tried, I ask my personal pooter guru for anything remotely tricky.
