Default Eudora will not connect from new laptop

I have a new Dell laptop (WIN XP Home) with wireless networking. I
use registered Eudora 6.2 but i cannot get it to see the network.
Three other softwares, Firefox, Mailwasher, and Free Agent have no
trouble getting online.

I have a wired/wireless Linksys G router. I have compared the setup
on my desktop with the setup on the laptop and can find no
differences, or anywhere where I would need to indicate a wireless
connection.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

-Bob

xface

I have no trouble connecting from my laptop wirelessly via my Linksys
WRT54G (an old version) using Eudora 6.2.3.0.

Thus, I think there is something wrong with your setup. Make sure Eudora
is set *NOT* to dial up or make connections.

(I had to delete and set up my Xnews. If this post looks strange, please
excuse an incomplete set up. It wasn't necessary, because the error is
Verizon's - posts from rec.woodworking are not registering as new
somehow)

Are any hardware/software firewalls blocking one of the SMTP/POP ports
(25 and 110)? In particular, look at the admin page on the router, and
if you have XP SP2, check the settings on Windows Firewall, and any
firewall you've added on.

Your post looked fine. I'lll give setup another look, but I've been
through it a dozen times.

I have the Windows firewall disabled, and have the firewall in the
router, and Zone Alarm on the laptop. When I tried to get on the
internet with any of my other softwares, I got the Zone Alarm message,
clicked "Allow" and they went right through. I'll check the router
for SMTP/POP port blocking, but my desktop is wired through the
router, and it has no problems at all.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I am having the same experience with Eudora 6.2 just downloaded and
installed. It appears that Eudora is not even attempting to connect through
my wired DSL router.

I am an IT manager at a small office and handle all the routing, firewall
and security issues there. I have never had a problem like this before (in
the last 15 years) with any email software.

It's nice that they offer tech support to paying customers, but why should I
buy if the product just simply doesn't work?

Well, I guess you shouldn't buy it if doesn't work. You might want to
find out why it doesn't work for YOU, though. It seems to work for most
others. BTW, I took the liberty of moving your reply to the bottom, so
it would conform to the way MOST others reply in this group.

With out a little more info, it might be difficult to help, or advise,
you how to set it up.

You might want to check your firewall. Any firewall, worth a damn, will
interpret a new installation (or upgrade) as a new program.

Thank you for your responses.

I am running Windows XP SP2 on an AMD XP2000 processor, 750 MB RAM.

I have checked Windows Firewall and Eudora is included in the list. I have
turned the firewall off. Still no luck. My Linksys router is set to allow
all the standard Email ports. Does Eudora use non-standard ports?

I have just done a new download from the Eudora site (6.2.3), un-installed,
rebooted and re-installed. I have turned off all background programs
including MS Antispyware.

When I click "Check Mail" I am expecting to see some response like an
interactive screen asking for a password or showing download progress or
giving me an error message. Nothing at all happens. Very strange.

I did notice that upon re-installing, the Options I had entered in the
initial install were still there... which means to me that Eudora does not
do a complete uninstall.

I have used older versions of Eudora about 6 years ago with good luck, so
this problem puzzles me. Considering it happened to Bob on a new Dell Laptop
makes me wonder if there is a problem with this release.

Thanks for your input.

Eudora uses whatever ports you've told it to use. Presumably you'd know if
you'd set it up to use non-standard ports.

Are you watching the task status window? If you see nothing there, it
sounds like you don't actually have Eudora set to check mail for any of
your personalities. Telling Eudora to do a mail check when no
personalities are set to check mail will result in exactly what you're
describing - nothing. Go to the Personalities window, right click on a
personality that should be checking mail, and make sure the check box for
"check mail" is checked.

Uninstall uninstalls the program, not the data files.
