Default Graphics not displaying why not

I'm using Eudora version 6.2.1.2 in "paid mode", the option "Display
graphics in messages" is checked, and I'm online through a broad band
connection through a cable modem. Recently I've had the intermittent
problem of my graphics in messages not displaying (the red X appears).
This happens maybe 25% of the time and I've not been able to find the
cause. Is there something I can do or is the problem a bug in Eudora?
Can anyone help?

Thanks, Bill

First, that option refers to attachments that are graphics. Is that the
type of graphics you're having problems with? If you are, then what kind
of internet connection you have is not relevant. If you're talking about
graphics that have to be downloaded, then that option is not relevant.

Second, which type(s) of graphic files is this happening with? Is it all
types? Jpegs? BMPs? Others? If these are attachments, can you open them
from outside of Eudora? Do you have problems with the same messages every
time you open them or does it happen one time but not another with the
same message? Do you get any errors of any sort either when receiving
these messages or when viewing them? What happens if you switch viewers?

The red X appears when you're using the MS viewer and there is supposed to
be a graphic that MS IE's rendering engine can't render. That can happen
for a bunch of reasons, some of which have more to do with MS IE than
anything else, and some of which have nothing to do with anything on your
computer. If MS IE is set to not display graphics, that would make this
happen. Since you say it is intermittent, I'll assume that's not the
problem. If the graphics involved have to be downloaded, and they can't be
downloaded either because they're no longer there or because the server is
too busy, that can cause this problem. Also, having a fast internet
connection does not mean that the graphics will download quickly.
Downloads are only as fast as the slowest part of the connection, and if
the server may be slow, either due to being slow in general or due to many
people trying to download graphics at the same time.

Hello Katrina,

The kind of graphics I'm having problems with are where the E-mail
message looks just like a web page. I guess this would be HTML
graphics (embedded?), but I also have the "Automatically download HTML
graphics" option checked. I can't tell you exactly which kinds of
graphics aren't being downloaded since I've gotten rid of the bogus
messages, but my guess would be all "kinds".

There is no problem downloading the message, but after double clicking
the message I'll see the page with the red X's instead of the
graphics. Sometimes if I open and close the message a number of
times, WHAM - all the graphics appear at once, which makes me think
that the links to the graphics aren't all that busy. Additionally,
the fact that my ZoneAlarm icon isn't showing activity when double
clicking messages with embedded graphics AND that there is no problem
viewing MS IE graphics at any time, I'm thinking that the problem is
in Eudora.

The next time I get a problem message, I'll try to answer your other
questions.

Thanks,
Bill

Most likely, they're graphics that have to be downloaded from embedded
links, although some might be actual embedded graphics.

Are the messages in question mostly from one or just a few sources or are
they from a whole bunch of sources?

That option only applies to the internal viewer.

Actually, that may be an indication of the reverse. The graphics start
downloading when you open the message the first time. If they're
downloading slowly, opening and closing the message several times is going
to give them time to download and at some point, when they're finished,
they'll appear immediately when you open the message. It could also be an
indication that the server only accepts a limited number of connections,
and it is simply taking that many tries before you actually manage to get
a connection to it at all. If something on your computer is blocking the
connections, you most likely wouldn't ever get the graphics, so we can
probably eliminate that possibility.

It doesn't sound like a Eudora problem. For one thing, you're using the MS
viewer and that gives most of the control over this to the parts of MS IE
that the MS viewer uses.

One thing that would be worth trying here would be to switch to the
internal viewer the next time you have a problem, and then reopen the
message in question. Do you get graphics then?
