Exchange 2000 On WAN

We have our two Exchange Server 2000 separated by a router.
We have blocked tcp/udp 135 on our routers.Half of the
mailboxes are in one server and half on the other.Inter
server mail flow is working fine,but we are not able to
replicate the exchange servers.How is Inter server mail
flow possible if MS-RPC ( tcp/udp 135 ) is blocked.
