Default SMTP 5.7.1 501 This system is not configured to relay mail from

For about a week we have been getting mail bounced back from (what we
thought) was a mail server on the other end with the following message:

'staff@company.com' on 11/16/2005 5:20 PM
You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For
assistance, contact your system administrator.
<hermes.domain.org #5.7.1 smtp;501 5.7.1 This system is not
configured to relay mail from <internal.sender@domain.org> to
<staff@company.com> for mail.domain.org>

This is the same message whether the email was sent by a receptionist or
administrator account (of course as luck would have it, it is the CEO who is
trying to send this particular message).

This only affects this one domain (company.com) that we are sending to,
every other domain works out fine. I have checked (what seems like) 100's
of technet articles but almost all of them refer to 550 5.7.1 errors and
those do not apply to the problems we are having and seem to be for a more
broad scope of emails.

I know that several of the Technet articles discuss many 550 issues as well
as Cisco PIX issues. We have elimiated the PIX issues by trying
work-arounds

Default SMTP 5.7.1 501 This system is not configured to relay mail from

Hi Customer,

Thanks for posting here.

Based on my knowledge, NDR 5.7.1 happens when you are trying to relay your
mail through another SMTP server and it does not permit you to relay.
Actually, the issue is much possibly caused by the configuration in mail
server of hermes.domain.org instead of your Exchange Server. Let me explain
it as below.

After ****yzing the NDR you provided, 5.7.1 happens in the following
scenario.

When you internal user sends a mail to staff@company.com, the mail is first
forwarded to mail server hermes.domain.org. And when mail server
hermes.domain.org tries to relay this mail to mail server in remote domain
company.com, it detects that your Exchange Server doesn¡¯t have permission
to relay this mail. That's why 5.7.1 happens.

Considering information above, please contact the administrator of
hermes.domain.org for more information.

Hope this helps. If there is anything I can help further, feel free to let
me know. Thanks!

Lee Li
