Exchange 5.5 is active for POP3 and IMAP clients by default. You'll
need to open the firewall for TCP 110 or 995 if you're using SSL and
a certificate.
In Exchange 5.5 you need to connect directly to the server on which
your mailbox resides to get at the mailbox (Exchange 2000/2003 can use
a front end server)
Client configuration is a simple affair, apart from the user id.
General format is DOMAIN\USERID\EXCHANGE-ALIAS
If the user id is the same as the alias you can leave it out.
The only other things are the server name and the password.
To send mail you'll need to enable the clients to relay through the
Internet Mail Service so watch you don't open it for relay to
everyone. You can configure the server to require authentication to
relay and configure the clients to use the windows credentials to
authenticate to the smtp service.
