When I try to uninstall instant messaging and chat
services on exchange 2000 in order to upgrade to 2003 I
get the following errors:

...cannot be assigned action "remove" because:
- Setup is unable to access the windows 2000 active
directory.
- Failed to contact the schmea master server for this
active directory forest.

Exhange is running on server 2000, everything else in the
domain is on server 2003.

Hi Adam,

Sounds like some issues with AD, you can download this utility to help
diagnose the problem:

Also you may need the following to transfer the FSMO roles over to another
DC if the utility shows problems:
