Default How to TELNET to localhost - which port # to use

This should be a simple one. I am running Windows XP Prof with IIS 5.1.

From the 'DOS Prompt' I am trying send an HTTP request to my own server, on
the same computer, using TELNET. Ultimately, I will do an HTTP request
using the "GET" command.

From the DOS prompt using these commands, I get these errors:

c:\>TELNET localhost
returns error "Could not open connection to the host; on port 23..."

c:\>TELNET localhost 80
apparently connects, but another black DOS like window opens with caption
'Telnet localhost'. There is a blinking cursor, but I cannot type
anything - it looks like a dead window.

How can I figure out which port # to use?

Thanks
Mike Thomas

The blank screen is probably working okay, apart from the fact that
you can't see what it's doing. Try
C:\>telnet
Microsoft Telnet>set LOCAL_ECHO ON
Microsoft Telnet>open localhost 80

Lee.

Thanks Lee,

It helped, somewhat, but still apparently no connection. I started a new
thread on this one.
Many thanks
