Default How 2 update I.E. 5.0 on laptop that does not have direct online access

I have had to perform a full recovery on my Toshiba Satellite 2755dvd laptop
(windows 98se), would like to go online with it to update all
drivers/software via Roadrunner high-speed cable access, thru an Arris TM402
modem, which I am currently using on my desktop computer. Problem: laptop
not compatible with Arris modem as is, attempted to load driver for modem
with accompanying cd-rom, install wizard states I cannot finish install
without Adobe 6.0.1 installed, cannot install Adobe with currently loaded IE
(5.0), which is no longer supported by Microsoft's knowledge base. Went to
Arris support page and obtained a copy of driver on floppy, installed onto
laptop, same results. I attempted installs with copies of various
downloadable newer versions of IE, all seem to require online access to
hook-up to Microsoft to finish download/install procedures, which is what I
am trying to do in the first place! Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

For IE5.5 SP2, you can get a CD here for $2.99
