im wondering if crm 3.0 can be installed on a standlone box? specially
without active directoy?

No, not without Active Directory. The smallest configuration for CRM is one
server running SBS 2003.

I thought crm 3.0 wasn't going to require active directory to install - that
security would now be handled in sql server...

AD will still be required, it just isn't used as heavily.
