Accessing a network drive?

This is a follow on question from a previous post of mine.

I have a network of 2 laptops and a desktop, linked with a Linksys ADSL
Router by hardwire.

I want to install an application on each machine (Act6) with the database
and common files being accessible to all three machines. Can I plug in a
network hard drive to my router and put the database files on there so that
all three machines will access them or do I need to install a server? One
laptop and the desktop run XP but the other laptop runs W2000.

Whether or not this will work will depend on the application. If it is
designed to be used in a network environment it will probably work okay, if
not you are sailing straight into trouble.

Thanks Richard. My main concern was whether a "network drive" can be
accessed by all 3 machines if I plugged it into the router or whether I
needed to attach a server to the network to hold the data files.

If the "network" software for that drive runs on 2000 then yes the
Windows 2000 box should see it.

All the computers will be able to see the file(s) whether they are on a
server or a workstation. The problem is whether the application is
network-aware - if its not and you let multiple people work on the same data
file(s) you will either lose changes or corrupt the data store.
