What might be the consequences of blocking port 1434 from
broadcasting across network? We are not currently using
any named instances so we won't have ill effects there.
Will anything else be broken?

Blocking Port 1434
The only thing that will break is the ability to connect to an instance
running on a TCPIP port other than 1433 (ie a named instance or a standard
instance running on something other than 1433), over using the TCP/IP
netlib.
