We have a situation,

A sql server 2000 cluster on win 2k we inherited with virtual sql server
service accounts running on a domain cluster service account.

The problem is we recently tried to apply SQL SP3 and the setup ask for
the cluster account password which no one has, we thought we could use
any domain-wide account to run the setup but it didn’t work.

Is the right approach now for us to go into the virtual sql server
enterprise manager and change the password (with a new password) for the
cluster account for both sql server and sql agent and then re-run the
sp3 setup with this account.

We just want to be sure that changing the password will maintain the
availability of the cluster

your advice will be appreciated.

You have to change the cluster account password you have to go in
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Cluster Service

open the service's property page, go to Log On tab and then changing the
Cluster Admin pwd
You must repeat the previos steps for both nodes of the cluster
