Default Cluster Installation Problem

Hi,

We are configuring a 2-node Windows 2003 Enterprise
Cluster. When running the New Server Cluster Wizard, it
asks us to enter an IP address that the cluster management
tools to connect with. We type in an IP address 194.1.1.1
(or several other ones) and get this error every time.

The error is:

Find Matching Network
The subnet mask could not be supplied automatically for
this IP address. Please check the address to make sure it
is correct.

We have 3 NICS:

-- One has IP address 192.168.1.1/24. Under "Advanced"
there are no other IP address. This is going to be the
external LAN

-- One has IP address 193.168.1.1/24. Under "Advanced"
there are no other IP address. This is going to be the
Private LAN.

-- The 3rd interace is disabled.

I have read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 297807 but I
still cannot get around this error!

We do not have adpater teaming. I "did" have it installed
at one time but I have removed the team and uninstalled
the Intel ProSet software and configured the NICS as
stated above.

We do not have more than one IP address associated with an
interface.

We are stuck and losing time today. Could someone please
help us get around this error?

Thanks,
Todd

The first address, 192.168/24 is your LAN, correct? The second, 193.168/24
is the cluster heartbeat then. The address that it is asking you for is a
virtual address and needs to be on your LAN, the 192.168/24 network. Hope
that helps.

Hi Todd,

From what I understand in your description this sounds to be the expected
behavior :-)
Let me elaborate and correct me if am wrong -

NIC 1 = 192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
hence the network is: 192.168.1.0

NIC 2 = 193.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
hence the network is: 194.168.1.0

The IP you are supplying is 194.1.1.1 (it doesnt match any of the 2 above
networks).
You need to use an IP like 192.168.1.X OR 193.168.1.Y

In your specific case, since you are mentioning that NIC1 is the public,
then you must use an IP of the format:
192.168.1.X

Hope this helps....

I believe that you meant under NIC 2 "hence the network is 193.168.1.1" not
194.168.1.1, and I'm pretty sure the answer that I had given two days
before was exactly the same as the one you gave him. I really like
Microsoft, but leave it to MS to be a day late. ;-)

I gotta agree that you are an active fellow on the groups :-) so I cant
complain.
I just felt your answer was a bit concise, so I wanted to elaborate on the
issue, that was it ;-)

Thanks for the correction though...
