Does anyone have any advice on the best way to start afresh with a new
CRM deployment. Basically I have a dev environment where I have done
some customizations and I want return to a clean install, is uninstall
and re-install the best way to do this?. Any advice appreciated.

Yep. uninstall is the only sure way to restore everything. There is no
supported way to move anu new attributes you have created, so the re-install
with a new DB is the only way to go.

I do all of my development via VirtualPC. I have created VirtualPC images
of Windows XP, Windows 2000 Server (with and without SQL server), Windows
2003 Server (with and without SQL server), Windows 2003 Sharepoint and
Windows 2000/2003 CRM. Whenever I need a blank developoment or testing
environment, all I have to do is copy one of these files and start up a new
VirtualPC instance. No install/uninstall.

I use this method, but I use WMWare Workstation... It seems to be about
20-30 percent faster.

The new features in Vm 5 (currently beta) make create/restoring a dev
environment very painless. I would recommend vmware.
