Default dns lookup

I have an AD domain with 4 DC's...each running DNS and DHCP. I want to have
hosts that are not part of the domain but get their ip-address from DHCP to
be added to the DNS entries so that I can resolve them. Is that possible? if
yes, how?

If you are allowing non-secure updates, they will register into DNS. If they
are non-Microsoft operating systems, you will need to set DHCP (DHCP
Properties, DNS Tab), to update ALL machines, whether they can or cannot to
insure DHCP registers them.

How are zone updates set for both zones? Secure or non-secure?

Configure DHCP with Option 015 set to the DNS Domain name and if your DHCP
servers are Win2k3 or Win2k8 Configure a dedicated user account credentials
on the Advanced tab of the DHCP Server Properties sheet. The user account
does not need any elevated rights, a normal user account is fine, I do
recommend using a Strong non-expiring password on the account.

I configured the dhcp option 15 with the domain name and assigned a user
account. now i see that the dhcp lease (icon) for the system that i'm testing
has changed to a pc with a pen: which i looked up and it states that a write
is pending. i'm still missing something.

Look at the lease in DHCP, in the Name column, does it have the Fully
Qualified Domain Name of the computer?
If it is not the FQDN only the PTR can be registered, and you should check
that your DNS registration settings in TCP/IP properties on the DNS tab are
set as per the following.
On the DNS tab in TCP/IP properties, clear the "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS" and "Use this connection's DNS suffix in DNS registration"
check boxes, the DHCP Server will fill these in for you and register using
the domain name in Option 015.

Nice catch, Kevin! The client is probably configured with either no suffix
or a different suffix than the zone in DNS.
