Under Win XP Pro what is the largest single file that I can write to a
DVD+-R?

i don't think this has anything to do with xp. A dvd holds something like
4.38 gbs. Look at some utilities like those at afterdawn.com for compression
utilities to get up to 8 gb on one.

Yes, I know tha the total capacity of a DVD is about 4.38 GByte. My queston
is: What is the maximum size of a simgle file.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. You can find the maximum file sizes

I still am a bit confused how the DVD fits into your question. If the above
link doesn't answer the question, maybe you can rephrase it for me.

The maximum file size is (assuming NTFS)
In Theory: 16 exabytes minus 1 KB (264 bytes minus 1 KB)
In Implementation: 16 terabytes minus 64 KB (244 bytes minus 64 KB)

Thanks for you reply. I have looke at the url you sent me but it doesn't
appear to answer my question. Let me rephrase it.
The web page you referenced states:
"Each file system supports a maximum volume size, file size, and number of
files per volume." I fully understand how this works for hard drives which
can have FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS file structures. Each of these has a maximum
volume size and a maximal file size. In some situations the maximal file
size can be less than the maximal volume size.
1: I am concerned only about maximal file size- not maximal volume size. I
am only interested indata files.
2: In addition I am NOT concerned about how this relates to hard drives. My
hard drive volumes use NTFS which allows for huge file and volume sizes. My
question relates only to data files copied to DVD.
3: I know that a DVD can store a total of about 4.5 GByte of data (about 9
GByte for a double layer DVD.) My question is: Can a DVD (under Win XP Pro)
have a SINGLE data file of this length (4.5 or 9 GByte)?
4: Finally does it make any difference whether or not I am using packet
writing software (for example, Nero InCD)?

Since you are talking about data DVDs (using UDF), ISO compatibility limits
you to 2GB but you can make a "pure" UDF disk and then you get past the 2GB
limit (not sure what the exact maximum is but presumably very large) . If
you have Nero, play with that and look at all the different ways you can
create a DVD It's not very intuitive but in StartSmart select the Data
icon, then scroll to the right (ISO is the default on the left).
