Event Log Stop Logging

I am wondering what to do when a event log stops logging.
I cleared the log but it still does not log any new
events. I also noticed that once the event log stopped
logging that certain applications would freeze. Any person
trying to open word or excel would freeze and have to end
the task. The only way i know how to fix the issue is to
reboot the system. Any Ideas?
