Field Customization

I am looking for a supported customization method to add masking to a field
on a CRM form. The task type list doesn't include a masking for phone
numbers. I need to be able to restrict what is typed into the phone field as
we are using the area code as a reference to route leads to the correct Sales
person.

Joris Kalz describes in his blog how to do this:

It is done by a bit of simple programming and Joris states at the end: "...
this will keep Microsoft CRM in a supported state." and "...by using this
technique Microsoft CRM will stay upgradeable, but what is not guaranteed,
that your extensions will work in future version, if you do not take care."

I don't know if this fits your definition of "supported"
