Default GP not enforced when not connected to the domain

I am trying to figure out how do you not enforce a group policy when a user
is not connected to the domain. For example, we route our interent access
thru a server for monitoring access by putting in a ip address for the proxy
server. When a user takes his laptop with him and is on the road, he
obviously is no longer connected to the domain and the server that routes for
internet access is not present either. I need to know how the policy can not
be enforced when the user is not connected to domain so that the user can use
the web browser.

Howdie!

GP applies to users and computers although they're not connected to the corp
net. That's how they are designed. Think about security settings you put in
place and users take their machines home - you surely want these settings
still apply for the user/machine - no matter where they are.

The scenario you describe is a pretty common scenario many organizations
face. A good thing would be looking at WPAD - that's an automatic mechanism
to deploy proxy settings to browsers. Inside the corp net people get the
proxy settings to use the corp internet and at home, where there's no proxy,
people can choose their own settings.

cheers,

Florian
