Installing Sharepoint POrtal server.

To install Sharepoint Portal server(SPS),
do we need to install Windows sharepoint services(WSS)?
If not, is it installed when SPS is installed?

Also when you install SPS and WSS is not installed automatically, can
you still create team sites/collaboration sites like in WSS with SPS?

Before you get too far into yuor SPS work, you might want to get the
SharePoint Products & Technologies Resource Kit. SPS isn't something you
can just slap up without a good deal of prior planning.

SPS install is multiple steps, and WSS will be installed if it's not
already. You cannot run SPS without WSS (SPS is essentially a layer on top
of WSS).
