Default Missing Icon Images

I have a lot of icons on my desktop where the images arent there, they have
the basic windows no image icon.

Outlook MSG files and HMTL, HTM files are all missing there icons.

Can anyone tell me how to fix?

Default Missing Icon Images

Hi

My HTML, HTM and MSG icon images are all missing, they show the "no icon"
image instead. They still load OK though when I double-click.

There are probably more but these are the most important for me.

Can anyone help

Hello David,
Open Windows Explorer.
Goto to Tools, then folder options.
Choose File Types
Locate the extension in the list, click the advanced button.
There is an option to select the icon under that dialog box.
Thanks,

Hello David,
Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows Explorer?
Are you pointing to 32-bit or 64-bit copies of the files that contain the
icons?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Default Missing Icon Images

Hi Daniel,

I am using 64bit version as Taskmanager does NOT show the *32 next to the
process.

No matter what I change the icon to, or to associate it with a different
program, and although it shows in the dialog box, my icons are not changing.

I am an Administrator, I have full access, all other icons seem OK (I just
installed VS2005 and its icons are fine)

I havent changed anything that the default OS installed at all.

I wonder if there is a "Rebuild Icons" function like in TweakUI that could
fix. This must be a common problem, am I really the only person who has this?

Hello David,
It's not rebuilding the icons that is the problem. Something is
interfering with their ability to be displayed.
The icons are imbedded inside of various system dlls. So unless those
system files are totally corrupted the icons are available. If those files
are corrupted you would be seeing other issues, more serious issues.
No one else is reporting this problem that I have seen.
So the idea is reduce what we look at by troube-shooting.
Thus the request to try in Safe Mode to see if makes any difference, ( this
is interference with another service, driver, or program)
Also check if logging in as another user has the same issue. ( this means
it's unique per user account)
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Default Missing Icon Images

Hi Darrell, I liked your thought process and tried both things.

Unfortunately, it didnt work as hoped. I also tried changing icons while in
safe mode and different user, but still no joy.

I found a forum where someone had a similar problem with his wmp icon in
quick launch, but didnt get it sorted.

I also found a forum where they did get it sorted!!!!
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=345297

Basically I had to reset web settings in IE after deleting a reg key and
that fixed the problem, according to the guy in the forum, it happens after
installing Office 2003.

Thanks for all your efforts though.

Very much appreciated....

NO REALLY........
