Monitor properties cannot be changed
W2K is using basic VGA, its default setting. IMO, there are four
possibilities: a) W2K has lost the drivers/resource file for your monitor
type; b) the video card's drivers are corrupted; c) the video card is
misbehaving, perhaps on its way to the great dumpster in the sky; d) the
monitor's firmware is corrupted (the onboard program that enables it to
communicate with your computer, which it needs to do to go to sleep, etc.)
I'd try reinstalling the video drivers, etc first. If that doesn't work, I'd
take the monitor to another box, and see if it can be set to the proper
resolution. If so, the video card is the most likely culprit.
