Default networking XP to 98SE -no connection?

I'm trying to set up a simple network between my XP machine and one with
98SE.

I did all the obvious: ran the network set up wizard on both machines, and
plugging my cables, etc.

XP says the cable is not plugged in. 98 says nothing (this being 98, I
suppose)

The LEDs to not light up.

I tired different NICs (my XP machine has two, I'd like to have one
dedicated to my DSL connection, and the other one to the network)

I even tried different cables.

They do not see each other at all, so neither has an IP address I can check.

Please help!

If you're using only cables to connect your two PCs together (no hub, switch
or router between them) then you need to get a crossover network cable to
connect them.
