NO more Sound

I had Windows ME and then changed to Windows 2000 but I'm
not able to get my sound to work. I get an error message
after attempting to add hardware. it reads as follows
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
Any help would be great. I've attempted to remove the
sound card and re-install it a number of times with no
success.
