Default Redirection when using Basic Authenticaiton?

Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to redirect an un-
authenticated user to an anonymous "splash" or welcome
page whenever they try to access a page on the secured
site that is using Basic Authentication.

This page will have company bulletins, news, alerts, etc
along with a link that that states something like "To
login and continue, click here" which will then link to
another secure page that will raise the basic
authentication dialog box and allow the user to login.

Is this at all possible with ISAPI filters (or something
else) in conjunction with IIS? If so, can you use C#?

Thanks, Dave

The key question you must answer is:
- How do you distinguish an anonymous user that needs to see the splash page
from an anonymous user that just needs to login (and does not need to see
the splash page)?

David,

right calling convention (which is not even the C one, ISAPI DLLs use
"Pascal" calling convention like most of Windows API calls). Jerry

Just for simplicity's sake... I did not want to draw out this argument with
an user that won't necessarily grok it.

None of the CLR languages can do this (closest bridge is Managed C++ , but
that doesn't work right now due to the CLR, either). VB / Script languages
don't work. Yes, Pascal/Delphi works, but from some of the
framework/results, I wish it didn't.

David,

why does an ISAPI filter or extension be written in C? You can use any
language that has tools to create a DLL with exported functions, using the
right calling convention (which is not even the C one, ISAPI DLLs use
"Pascal" calling convention like most of Windows API calls). Jerry

Hallo David,

.... just fine :-)

Hmmm, totally disagree with that ;-) Could you explain where you're
seeing problems/risks?

I was working on someone else's problem with a Delphi based framework that
layer on top of ISAPI to attempt to "abstract" server programming such that
the Delphi app could run on Apache/Linux, for example (sorta like how
PHP/Perl works ).

I cannot remember everything from back then, but I recall thinking how much
junk the framework (which I went to their website to get an understanding of
what they do, and they got rave reviews and won awards) tosses in between
the programmer and what they want to do ( very similar to MFC, something
else I dislike for ISAPI as it also does some sneaky things behind your back
with querystring, amongst others ). I've just never had a good impression
coming from Delphi, though I know people do build ISAPIs with it.

Dude, ya should get out of gradeschool! :-)

Hallo David,

Write onces, run everywhere ;-)

Discussing pro and cons of the different frameworks would be slightly
off-topic, but you can still use native ISAPI.
In conjunction with the provided IOCP based thread pool there are not so
many differences to the samples inlcuded in platform sdk.

But I was more thinking of ISAPI filters here and there isn't any kind
of framework for in Delphi :-)

Did you ever told A. Hejlsberg about that or did he already by switching
to C#...? ;-)
