do this search

select LongDescription From MatText where CONTAINS
(LongDescription, ' "VAL" ')

and then
select LongDescription From MatText where LongDescription
like '%VAL%'

I suspect that you have a word like BYVAL somewhere in
longdescription that is showing up in the like and not in
the contains query.

Also try

select LongDescription From MatText where LongDescription,
like 'VAL'
which should be the functional equivalent of the contains.

What exact SQL Server version and on what OS platform (NT 4.0 or Win2K or
WinXP or Win2003) is it installed?
Post the full output of: SELECT @@version

Also, could you post the actual data/text in the column that your are
searching against?
