just be a domain member?

It can be a member server.

I'm not sure about your reference to a BDC - BDCs only exist in the
pre-Windows 2000 world (eg Windows NT 4). You can't run SUS on Windows NT 4.

(In fact, with SUS v1, you couldn't run it on a DC at all. SUS SP1 allows
you to run it on a DC)
