Good Day All.

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction concerning
software updates. I recently downloaded from the Microsoft website a feature
pack for software updates, SMS2003ScanTools_ENU file. I progressed through
the wizard successfully chosing a test machine and checking other options.

The wizard has created three collections, a single software package and an
adverti*****t.

I am a bit confused as to what should happen next. Should the test subject
receive/install the scanning tools and the Site Server receive/install the
sync tool automatically or do I need to start this process off and how.

I have download two guides for SMS 2003 and have failed to locate any
definitive instructions, I would be happy for any suggestions.

The test client initially is the only member of the collection which is
targetted to run the software updates scan. The client will run the scan
progam and then once hardware inventory has run, the client will reflect
what patches are installed or applicable in resource explorer. Those
patches that are applicable will be available to be distributed via the
Distribute Software Updates Wizard.
The sync program will run on one client which was designated during the
installation and this will download the latest MSSecure.XML file (in .cab
format) and update the distribution points. Eventually you will want to
have all of your clients running the software updates scan, so you will
know what patches are installed or applicable on your clients.

Thank you for your reply.

I believe the scan program has run on my test machines as I now have listed
items under the
'Software Updates' tree item and the hardware section under resource
explorer shows listed items.

Do you know why the time I received the results seem to coincide with my
software inventory schedule and not the Hardware inventory schedule?

Is it just a matter of modifying the Security Update Inventory tool
collection in order to deploy the tool to the enterprise?

You could either add all your users to the Security update tool collection
or create a new adverti*****t to an existing collection.
