Default SMS2.0 & Laptop Users

Hi All SMS Guru'

I have deployed the Microsoft feature pack for patch management on SMS 2.0 / Windows 2000

All works great for the desktop users who are permanently connected to the LAN as we leave desktops on overnight but in a logged off state........however I need to deploy security patches to laptop users as well

Can someone please advise as to a best practice / good procedure to use for deploying to laptops

ie. Should I use a notification pop-up for laptop users to close all programs and wait for the update to finish or can I run software and security updates in the background while users are logged on and running other applications. Main concern is laptop users only getting half of a software install then undocking their laptop and this causing problems

All our links are good and fast so no issues there

There are no immediate plans to go to SMS 2003

TI

"Main concern is laptop users only getting half of a software install then
undocking their laptop and this causing problems."

If this really is your main concern, you really need SMS 2003 since a major
feature is support for mobile users.
The "download and execute" model goes beyond bandwidth-friendly, it ensures
that the entire package is available locally before running on the laptop.
If the decision makers in the company use laptops and travel, I'm sure they
would want their machines as reliably updated as possible.
If upgrade cost is a concern, you could create a site for your mobile users
only and attach your existing SMS 2.0 hierarchy to it.
