Default Struggling to point clients to new DNS server

Hi all

I have another Win 2003 DC that will be the new DNS server in the domain
now. The old one will be formatted. the changes have replicated so the new
box is up and have exactly the same entries like the old one. Pronlem is the
Win XP clients are still pointed to the old box to see as their DNS server.
How do i change this so that they look to the next box.If someone can
provide a step-by-step guide or link please. I look on the net but havent
find anything so far

Thx in advance

Hello MSExchangeStudent,

Do you use DHCP, the reconfigure the scope options for the new DNS server.
Did you also make the new DC Global catalog server and move the FSMO roles
to it?

Best regards

Hi Meinolf

Thank you for your quick response

Please read inline...

Yes i use DHCP

Ok, can you talk me through how to do this? I went to have a look. Must i
open my DHCP console > right click server options > configure options > Tick
off 006 > once ticked off put in the servername and IP off the new DNS
server > Must i then click on apply? What must i then do to activate the
newly added DNS server ie. so that clients use that one and not the old one
anymore.

Also will users experience issues while working if i do this during office hours?

Yes the server is a GCS

Look i had 2 DC in the domain (server 1 and server 2) both were DC's and
GCS. I will decom server 1 which was the exchange box - Must the roles be on
every DC or should it be fine if it is on Server 2 allready.
If it need to be on the new server also can i use
http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm to put it on there?

Hello MSExchangeStudent,

Yes, that's the way to do it. Next time when logon or when the new lease
is requested they will get the new DNS server. The 5 FSMO roles are once
in your domain. So make sure they are on the server that will stay. The article
is fine for that.

I have succesfully tranferred the RID and PDC role - when i try to tranfer
the infrastructure role i get the follwoing message : What do i do?

<servername> is a GCS. the infrastructure operations master rols should not
be transferred to a GC server. Please see help for more info.

Are you certain you want to transfer the infrastructure operations master
role to this GC server.

The options i can choose from is Yes/No/Help

Can i just choose Yes and/or why do i get this warning?

Hello MSExchangeStudent,

Just a warning, you can transfer it. The IM you have to take care of if you
have multiple domains in your forest.

Also when trying to transfer the Schema Master role > When i right click
Active Directory Schema > Operations Master > The current schema and the one
to transfer it to is the same. Both is the old server where the roles should
be transferred FROM. When i click on change i get this : The current DC is
the Operations Master. To transfer the Operations Master to a different DC,
you need to target AD Scheme to that DC.

How do i get this role transferred? or why do i get this message?

Read inline please.

In news:e7jvZjfhJHA.4912@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl,

You have to connect to the Domain Controller you are transferring the role
to. If you are using the GUI, right mouse click and select "Connect to
Domain Controller"
