I just purchased a Vista HP Desktop and I am trying to transfer recorded TV
to my mobile phone and Axim x50v. The files transfer, however when I go to
play them all I get is sound and a black screen? Do I need to download some
type of encoder or do I need to check the settings in MCE or Window Media
Player? Thanks

Some questions:

1) How did you transfer the files (with Windows Media Player, or
drag-and-drop via Windows Explorer?)

2) Are the recorded TV files .dvr-ms files from Media Center?

3) Which version of Vista do you have (Home Basic, Home Premium,
Ultimate, etc.)?

TV recorded by Media Center is in .dvr-ms format (which is encoded with
MPEG-2). This format isn't natively supported on most devices, so it
should be converted to WMV first.

If you use Windows Media Player to sync the recorded TV to a device, it
should convert the format automatically. For .dvr-ms files, you'll need
either Vista Home Premium or Ultimate, which have a built-in MPEG2 codec
needed for the conversion.

I transfer via Windows Media Player 11. I have it set on automatic i.e. I
let the computer decide the best quality to encode.

It sounds like I am doing everything right it just won't convert to a proper

Yes, it sounds like you're doing all the right things.

Have you checked to make sure you've got the latest version of Windows
Mobile Device Center (WMDC) installed on Vista? There is a newer
version than the one included in Vista.

Also, which version of Windows Mobile are your devices running? Windows
Mobile 5?

The Dell Axim x50v runs off of 2003. My cingular 2125 runs mobile 5.0.

I had that problem with my Axim. I ended up finding TCPMP, a free player
program...it had links to a free conversion program, although that program
requires them to be in WMV or MPG format first. It's a bit of a hassle to
convert from DVR-MS to the intermediate format then to a format for the
Axim, but it works well enough and the video is drop-dead gorgeous.
