Very Slow Network Performance
Hi Roman!
What you're seeing could be caused by a variety of problems, so I'll ask for
a little more about your network.
What versions of Mac OS are you running?
Is everything (server and stations) plugged into a hub?
Are all the machines properly configured for TCP/IP?
Do you have a router on your network?
How many devices (hubs, switches, etc.) are between your Macs and your
server, what are they and what brands?
What network speed are your Macs using (10mb, 100mb). Check this on each Mac
and don't rely on what they *should* be running.
What models of Macs do you have?
My initial guess is that you may have some of the newer G4 models that are
gigabit capable. The network card on some of these machines can have
difficulty negotiating a proper network speed and duplex, especially with
SOHO hubs, switches or routers (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear). One solution that
I've found that works well for this type of problem is to install 10/100
NICs in the G4s and not use the built-in NICs. A new NIC card should run
about $10-$15.
