Default Windows NT 4.0 DHCP Problems

I am using DHCP on a Windows NT 4.0 Server and my server
can access the Internet but my Win 98 Clients cannot. I
have two XP clients and they also can access the Internet.
What am I doing wrong with the DHCP setup?

I doubt you'll get much help without more details. What does you
internet connection look like, how are your network and IP addresses
setup?

Default Windows NT 4.0 DHCP Problems

Sorry,
I am new to this..
We are using an ISDN router from Southwestern Bell. The
Router is connected to a hub and the PC's are connected to
the Hub along with the server. They have given us a range
of IP addresses that I have set up with a scope in DHCP.
The PC's are getting their addresses from the DHCP server
and this seems to me working fine. I can ping the Router
(gateway) and I can ping the server from all of the PC's
in the office. One thing I noticed in the Event Viewer
was the two following errors over and over again and I
don't know why.
This one first "The Microsoft Winsock Proxy Service
service returned service specific
error 213000"
Then this one "incorrect network configuration
None of Servers addresses are internal"

I have no idea what either of them mean.... I checked the
Microsoft Knowledge Base and couldn't find anything on
either error. Do you need any other info?

Do you want to use the Winsock Proxy Service? If not, disable it. If
yes, then it looks misconfigured. Is your DHCP setup to pass on proxy
information?

Can the PC ping outside addresses, such as http://www.microsoft.com? If yes,
and they simply can't use IE, try going under the connections tab and
setting the proxy option you want to use (ie none, or enter the
address of the server running the proxy).

also, I cannot ping outside addresses. What services do I
need to have running with DHCP on Win NT4.0? Is something
in the Server keeping my client machines from connecting?
The client machines are connected to the hub along with
the ISDN modem, that is what is confusing me.

I'd still wonder if your DHCP settings are correct. On the Win98
clients, try running 'winipcfg' and on the server run 'ipconfig /all'
from a command prompt. Compare the settings, in particular the subnet
mask, gateway, and DNS server.

I forgot to mention that you should try pinging outside addresses by
IP as well as by name. For example 206.112.112.71 is
http://www.microsoft.com. If you can ping by IP, then it's a name resolution
problem - ie DNS lookups are not working.

particular the subnet

addresses by

name resolution

reconfirm the settings like you mentioned. I will reply
again to this in the morning to let you know what happens.
Thanks for your help with this.
Talk to you tomorrow.

with

happens.

I can ping the server from the clients using the IP or the
name and both work, so it seems that DNS is working OK
inside the network but not past the gateway. I have tried
removing the DNS settings from the clients and this
doesn't work either. I know that it has to be something
simple, but I don't see it.

I FOUND IT!

There is a setting in the Network Properties on the WINS
tab that stated "Use DHCP for WINS Resolutions" I set
this to disable and off we went.
Thanks for your help,

Steve
