Default Winmgmt

Reloaded ME to clear a different problem and when I got
done I couldn't use any system tools due to Winmgmt
causing an error in Kernel32. When I try System
Information I get a report 2147024893 to Microsoft -
right. I also fault out on PCHEALTH. I have a pile of
paperwork downloaded from support and have yet to clear
the problem. The KB pretty much leaves you hanging.

Default Changing Icons to List for all folders

I recently reinstalled ME over itself following Koldbear's instructions.
Now, all my folders' contents appear as icons. As an old DOS codger, I
prefer Lists and I recall there is a way to change this for every Folder -
but I can't remember how! Could SKS please remind me?

TIA

Jim, in sunny Brisbane, Oz

Default Can't load IE6 with Service Pack 1

I have been trying to load this update from a (good) magazine CD.
Everything is fine until the install gets to the last item, Windows Media,
when it hangs up at 87%. Trying to escape from this situation can then cause
the OS to freeze up. Is there any reason why the install stops and this
hangup should happen, if so, how may I cure it?

TIA,

Jim, in sunny Brisbane, Oz.

Oh dear... this looks like the classic 'Quackery' failure.......
Are you running Norton Quack? er...
Are you perhaps running Norton System Quack (sorry - Doctor)?
If so, then read on......

You may have up to 32,000 empty OEM*.INF files sitting in your
c:\Windows\INF folder, which prevents any program putting a legitimate *.INF
file in there (it also slow your system down to stop, trying to read them
and sort the [non-existent] contents!).
You need to DELETE all 0byte (and ONLY the 0byte) OEM*.INF files.
look here for information on how to do that , and how to prevent it
happening again (i.e. TURN OFF NORTON SYSTEM DOCTOR - unless you are
actively troubleshooting something)

The Symantec site:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nunt.nsf/docid/2000120915010309&src=n

also MS KB Q291431 - "WINUP-Windows Me Updates Fail When Using Norton System
Doctor"
"Computer Stops Responding (Hangs) During Setup, Installing Updates, or
Adding New Hardware"
also
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301540
(which contains the fix for your problem in the NOTE under the patch
description)
Phone your Local MS office, and tell them your problem quoting Q301540 -
they'll either send you the patch, or give you a one-use password, for the
cost of the call.

Good Luck
