Default Wireless mouse knocks out Exporer.exe on Win2000

I installed a Microsoft Laser Wireless Mouse 5000 per instructions on my
Windows 2000 Pro with SP4. The mouse worked fine but there was just a blank
blue screen. No desktop icons, start up, taskbar, etc. I uninstalled both
hardware and software for the wireless mouse and reconnected my wired mouse,
but no change in screen. I can Ctrl-Alt_Del and access my programs through
Task manager but I cannot call up Explorer.exe. It says it cannot find the
file and that all the required libraries may not be available.

I have reinstalled Windows 2000 over the current settings and reinstalled
SP4, but no change. All Suggestions welcome.

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and
Passwords').

Failing that you might try a repair installation.

What an In-Place Windows 2000 Upgrade Changes and What It Does Not Change

Be sure to apply these to your repair install before connecting to any

Then

Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

then
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS08-067.mspx

if that doesn't work then you're probably left with a clean installation.

Thanks for the suggestions. How do I locate Users and Passwords through task
manager? Is there a command that calls up control panel?

Tried a new user and got this message:

Windows cannot copy file C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\O78IATCD\6[1].exe to location
C:\Documents and Settings\Test\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\O78IATCD\6[1].exe. Contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - Access is denied.

Trying the upgrade windows 2000 the directions say to press a key to start
from the CD ROM, but I dont know which key. Also, will the upgrade do
anything that a reinstall does not, I did a full reinstall (with current
settings preserved)?

Also, I cannot load control.exe, it gives the same error message as for
explorer.exe.

Thanks

Bill

Press any key, it doesn't much matter.

Sounds like the permissions are hosed. You're probably looking at a clean
install.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

and

I may not be able to get to this for a few days. To be clear, am I right
that deleting all partitions and doing a clean install will erase all my
programs and data?

Since I wont be on the internet immediately after a reinstall, what is the
best way to transfer SP4 and the other programs? I could download these
programs to a flashdrive and then transfer to the hard disk if that will work.

Thanks again

Bill

Before you completely rebuild your machine, you might want to resolve the
permissions issue. There are several ways of doing this. The first one is to
log on as "Administrator". Can you do this? If yes, can you open the Control
Panel?

I can log on as Administrator but running control or control.exe from the
taskmanager yields the message "cannot find the file...make sure file name
and path are correct and that all required libraries are available.
